Introduction

The International Society for Energy Transition Studies (ISETS) (The ISETS Society Incorporated, ARBN 670909485) is registered as a non-profit incorporated association in New South Wales, Australia, under the Associations Incorporation Act 2009, and has a global membership base.

ISETS is open to anyone who is interested. Registration (at www.isets.org) as Associate Member is free permanently. 

ISETS dedicates to facilitating a just, equitable and inclusive transition of energy and relevant sectors toward a sustainable low-carbon future with consideration of economic development, social equity, and environmental stewardship through international partnerships.

ISETS creates a global dialogue platform to discuss, share and disseminate knowledge on the energy transition for professionals from government, industry, academia, research institutes and other organizations across countries. 

The Co-Chairs of the ISETS Council are Dr. Xiansheng Sun, former Secretary-General of the International Energy Forum and Mr. Nobuo Tanaka, Emeritus Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA). The Chair of the ISETS Advisory Committee is H.E. Dr. Suwit Khunkitti, former Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand and

ISETS envisions a sustainable future where energy and related sectors undergo a just, equitable, and inclusive transition towards a low-carbon future. This transition considers economic development, social equity, and environmental stewardship, fostering global partnerships for a sustainable world.

Mission

ISETS aims to contribute to advancing the global energy transition, drive knowledge advancement, foster dialogue among stakeholders, support sustainable development in various sectors, and promote collaborative actions towards a clean and sustainable energy future.

Specifically, ISETS aims:

  • To promote informed debates on energy transition by providing a balanced consideration of both fossil fuel sectors and their alternatives. This includes fostering discussions on the challenges, opportunities, and implications of transitioning to sustainable energy systems.
  • To advance knowledge in the future development of energy systems and their transition processes. Through research, collaboration, and knowledge-sharing activities, ISETS strives to contribute to the understanding of technological, policy, and societal aspects related to energy transition.
  • To establish a global platform for multi-stakeholder dialogue and debates, connecting countries and regions. ISETS seeks to facilitate meaningful discussions among diverse stakeholders, including government representatives, industry professionals, researchers, and civil society organizations, fostering international cooperation and shared learning.
  • To enable businesses, public and private organizations to align their development trajectory towards clean energy pathways. ISETS supports and guides entities in transitioning to sustainable energy practices by providing access to best practices, resources, and expertise, thus promoting responsible and impactful actions.
  • To engage with national and international organizations, technology providers, and financial institutions, working in synergy towards energy transition. ISETS actively collaborates with various stakeholders to drive collective efforts and leverage expertise, technology, and financial resources in advancing the energy transition globally.

Brief History

ISETS was found on 16 June 2020 through the Founding Declaration signed by a group of 31 energetic and internationally acclaimed professionals who have extensive experiences in energy, environment and other sustainable development issues and three energy institutes.

The First Annual General Meeting on 15 January 2021 approved the Constitution, elected the Council and the Executive Committee.

ISETS has established ISETS Energy Finance Network (ISETS EFN) in 2023.
