The Second ISETS International Conference

“Boosting Energy Transition for Greener Economy”

The International Society for Energy Transition Studies (ISETS) will organise its second international conference on November 1-4, 2024, in Nanjing, in cooperation with College of Economics and Management, Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (NUAA).

The conference will address critical issues in sustainable energy transition and the global response to climate change. Its goal is to facilitate a comprehensive dialogue on the intersection of energy policy, climate governance, and technological innovation by bringing together leading academics, analysts, policymakers, and industry experts. This conference aims to foster collaborative approaches and innovative solutions for a sustainable and equitable energy future in the context of global climate challenges.

The conference venue, Nanjing, is a renowned historical and cultural city and serves as the capital of Jiangsu Province in China. It is celebrated for its profound historical significance, seamlessly blending ancient traditions showcased through its numerous historical sites with modern urban advancements. As a vital hub for education and research, Nanjing offers a unique fusion of cultural heritage and contemporary vibrancy. Hosting a conference in Nanjing not only grants attendees access to a city steeped in history and culture but also provides a modern, dynamic environment that fosters academic and professional exchanges.

Call for Special Session proposals:

The ISETS International Conference is now accepting applications for “Concurrent Sessions.” Each concurrent session is approximately 100 minutes in duration and should include a minimum of 4 paper presentations. The session organizer or their team can present a maximum of 2 papers during the session. Session organizers will be responsible for promoting the workshop, selecting, and reviewing the final report papers.

Following the conclusion of the Conference, papers presented during the sessions will be considered for publication in special issues.

Zhenmin Liu (刘振民)

China’s Special Envoy for Climate Change

Zhenmin Liu holds a Master of Laws from the Law School of Peking University. He is a Chinese diplomat who was named as the country’s special envoy for climate change on 12 January 2024. Previously he had served as the Under-Secretary-General for the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) from 2017 to 2022. He was appointed to that position effective on 26 July 2017. Prior to that he had served as Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of China after a thirty-year career in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China. While at DESA, Liu promoted China’s Belt and Road Initiative.

Xiansheng Sun (孙贤胜)

Chairman, ISETS Council

Dr. Xiansheng Sun is the Chairman of the International Society for Energy Transition Studies (ISETS) and previously served as the fourth Secretary-General of the International Energy Forum. He has extensive experience with the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), where he played a pivotal role in negotiating and signing numerous collaborative contracts for projects both domestically and internationally. Additionally, Dr. Sun served as President of the CNPC Research Institute of Economics and Technology (RIET), the corporation’s think tank, until the end of 2015.

Yuxin Hang (杭育新)

The Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Secretary of the Discipline Inspection Commission at Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics

Yuxin Hang is currently the Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Secretary of the Discipline Inspection Commission at Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He is also an associate researcher and a master’s advisor. Additionally, he is the Chairman of the Jiangsu Provincial Association for Intellectual Property Research in Higher Education Institutions, an Executive Director of the Jiangsu Provincial Federation of Social Sciences, and a part-time advisor for the Master’s program in Public Administration at Nanjing University. His primary research focuses on ideological and political education, Marxist philosophy and basic theories, and administrative management in higher education institutions. He has led several provincial and ministerial key research projects and social science fund projects. He has published over 20 papers in core journals and mainstream media, including the People’s Daily, Guangming Daily, Hongqi Wengao, and China Higher Education.

Yin Wu (吴吟)

FORMER DEPUTY DIRECTOR OF NATIONAL ENERGY ADMINISTRATION, CHINA

Yin Wu holds a Ph.D. in Management and is a Senior Economist with extensive expertise in the energy sector, with a long-standing focus on energy strategy and planning. With rich experience in the field, he has led research projects that have received over ten provincial and ministerial awards, and his policy recommendations have been acknowledged by leaders of the State Council more than ten times. He has held several prominent positions, including Deputy Director of the Energy Department of the National Development and Reform Commission, Chief Engineer of the National Energy Administration, Deputy Director of National Energy Administration, and Research Fellow of the Counselors’ Office of the State Council. Under his leadership, the Administration has been responsible for drafting and reviewing laws and regulations related to energy development and its supervision, implementing energy development strategies, and addressing major issues. Additionally, during his tenure, the Administration proposed industry policies and relevant standards for coal, petroleum, natural gas, electricity, and renewable energies. His leadership and decision-making have had a profound impact on the development of China’s energy industry.

Kebin He (贺克斌)

Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering

He Kebin is a professor of the School of Environment and Dean of the Institute for Carbon Neutrality at Tsinghua University, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering; Vice Chairman of the National Expert Committee for Ecology and Environmental Protection; the Chairman of the National Teaching Steering Committee on Environmental Science and Engineering. Prof. He focused on the research of complex air pollution. He conducted researches on the fields of the identification of particulate matters and complex air pollution, characterization of complicated emission sources and multi-pollutant control, and the coordinated control of air pollution and greenhouse gases. He was selected as Elsevier Most Cited Chinese Researchers in 2014-2023 and Clarivate Global Highly Cited Researchers in 2018-2023.

Nobuo Tanaka

Co-Chair, ISETS Council

Nobuo Tanaka is the Executive Director Emeritus of the International Energy Agency (IEA) and currently serves as Chairman of the steering committee for the Innovation for Cool Earth Forum (ICEF). As IEA’s Executive Director (2007-2011), he led the collective release of oil stocks in 2011. Beginning his career in 1973 at Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI), he held key roles, including Director-General of the Multilateral Trade System Department. As Minister for Industry, Trade, and Energy at Japan’s Embassy in Washington DC, he addressed major US-Japan trade issues. He also twice served as Director for Science, Technology, and Industry at the OECD in Paris. Now CEO of Tanaka Global Inc, he advises Japanese and international companies.

Baroness Bryony Worthington

Founder of Ember and Advisor of Repowering Initiative

Baroness Bryony Worthington was created a life peer in 2011 and sits on the Crossbenches. She was the lead author of the UK Climate Change Act 2008 and has over 25 years of experience working on climate, energy and environmental policy in the NGO and public sectors, as well as in the private sector for Scottish and Southern Energy. Bryony has been the Founding Director of Sandbag (now Ember), a global energy think tank; Executive Director for Europe at the Environmental Defense Fund and Co-Director of the Quadrature Climate Foundation. She currently runs her own consultancy business and has board level roles, in the not-for-profit and for-profit sectors, including Deputy Chair of the board of trustees at WWF-UK.

Ye QI (齐晔)

The Acting Dean of the Society Hub at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou)

Professor Ye Qi is the Acting Dean of the Society Hub at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) where he founded the Thrust of Carbon Neutrality and Climate Change, and the Thrust of Innovation, Policy and Entrepreneurship. Before joining HKUST, he was Cheung Kong Professor at Tsinghua University’s School of Public Policy and Management, and the Volkswagen Chair Professor of Sustainability at Schwarzman College, Director of Climate Policy Initiative. Between 2014 and 2019, he was Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution and the Director of the Brookings-Tsinghua Center for Public Policy. He taught ecosystem management and climate change science at the Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management at the University of California, Berkeley from 1996 to 2003, and was a faculty scientist at Cornell University’s Engineering and Theory Centre from 1995 to 1996. He received a Ph.D. in Environmental Science in 1994, jointly awarded by the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry and Syracuse University. He conducted post-doctoral research under Charles D. Keeling at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego. He published more than 200 journal papers and academic books on policy and governance of energy, environment and climate change.

Jiahua Pan (潘家华)

Member of the Academic Board, The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS)

Jiahua Pan is a prominent Chinese economist and vice director of China National Expert Panel on Climate Change, director of the Research Centre for Sustainable Development of CASS In addition, he is a member of the National Foreign Policy Advisory Committee and serves as Chief Scientist for China’s 973 Program. He was selected as one of the leading talents in philosophy and social sciences under China’s “Ten Thousand Talents Plan.” His academic and professional interests span across several fields including the economics of sustainable development, energy and climate policy, urban transformation, world economy, and environmental and natural resource economics. Pan Jiahua has led over 30 projects and published papers in renowned journals such as Nature and Science. He also has a notable background in global environmental policy, having worked as an advisor on environment and development for the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Beijing. Furthermore, he has made significant contributions to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), serving as a lead author for the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Assessment Reports on Mitigation.

Klaus Hubacek

PROFESSOR IN UNIVERSITY OF GRONINGEN, NETHERLANDS

Professor Klaus Hubacek is an ecological economist at the University of Groningen, with a research focus on conceptualizing and modeling the interaction between human and environmental systems and developing and modeling scenarios of future change. He has worked extensively with stakeholders in participatory research projects and led large interdisciplinary research teams. He has published over 200 peer-reviewed research articles on topics such as climate change adaptation and mitigation, participatory modelling, management of ecosystems services, land use change and governance. His research has been supported by national agencies in Austria, the Czech Republic, China, Japan, Spain, the UK, and the U.S. and international institutions such as the European Commission, the Interamerican Development Bank and the World Bank. He is recognized as a highly cited researcher with multiple papers in the top 1% by citations. Klaus was a lead author of the most recent 6th assessment report of the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) leading chapters on Behavior and Consumption-based Emissions.

Philip Andrews-Speed

Oxford Institute for Energy Studies, UK

Dr. Philip Andrews-Speed is a Senior Research Fellow at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies’ China Energy Research Programme. He previously served as Senior Principal Fellow at the Energy Studies Institute, National University of Singapore. Originally a mineral and oil exploration geologist, he transitioned to focus on energy and resource governance. His primary research interest lies in the political economy of the low-carbon energy transition, with a particular emphasis on China, and more recently, Southeast Asia. Philip has published widely on China’s energy governance, and his latest book, co-authored with Sufang Zhang, is China as a Global Clean Energy Champion: Lifting the Veil (Palgrave, 2019).

Qingchen Chao (巢清尘)

Director general of National Climate Center, China

Qingchen Chao currently serves as the Director general of National Climate Center in China. She has rich experience in climate risk research and climate policy. She serves as the chair of Standing Committee on Climate Services of World Meteorological Organization Committee, executive member of Chinese Meteorological Society, the member of Expert Committee on National Commission for Disaster Reduction and Member of the National Carbon Neutral Science and Technology Expert Committee. She has been engaged in Chinese delegation of the UNFCCC and IPCC negotiation. She was deeply involved in drafting the China Climate Adaptation Strategy(2035)and the National “14th Five-Year Plan” for Scientific and Technological Innovation in the Field of Ecological Environment. She has presided over more than ten national research projects. She was selected as the professional technical leaders for National Ecological and Environmental Protection and China Meteorological Administration.

Weerawat Chantanakome

Ministry of Energy, Thailand

Dr. Weerawat Chantanakome is the Ministry Counselor for International Affairs at Thailand’s Ministry of Energy. Previously, he served as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Brunei National Energy Research Institute (BNERI) and as Senior Team Leader at the Asia-Pacific Energy Research Centre (APERC). From 2004 to 2009, he was the Executive Director of the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE). With over 25 years of experience, Dr. Weerawat has led multi-disciplinary energy projects with major organisations such as the United Nations, World Bank, Asian Development Bank (ADB), International Energy Agency (IEA), and International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

Special issues

Outstanding papers from the 2024 ISETS International Conference scheduled for 1-4 November 2024 will be invited to submit to these special issues.

However, please be aware that only a small proportion of conference papers will be selected for publication, and participation in the conference does not automatically guarantee publication. All submissions must meet the regular requirements set by the journals. The acceptance letters will be issued and sent to the authors by the journal offices.

For developing countries to promote electric mobility, substantial challenges emerge in terms of affordability, potential for emissions reduction, charging infrastructure, electric vehicle and battery supply chain network, business model and ecosystem, integration with renewable energy, and waste battery management and recycling. In addition, urban-rural disparities in adoption and infrastructure deployment, and local capacity to manage the systems could aggravate concerns regarding a just transition. Mineral Economics (ESCI, JCR Q2): “Minerals in the Energy Transition: Challenges and Opportunities for Sustainable Development”. Call for Paper for a Special Issue in Mineral Economics

This special issue aims to explore and address the challenges and opportunities presented by the increasing demand for CETMs in the energy transition. It will focus on sustainable mining practices, policy frameworks, technological innovations, and the effective reuse and recycling of these minerals in a circular economy. The goal is to support the energy transition while ensuring that CETM development contributes to the SDGs.


Journal of the Asia Pacific Economy (SSCI): “How Green is the Belt and Road Initiative?” Call for Paper for a Special Issue in Journal of the Asia Pacific Economy

To provide comprehensive assessments for the green development of the Belt and Road Initiative and ways to promote green development, the Journal of the Asia Pacific Economy set up the special issue “How Green is the Belt and Road Initiative.” The organizers of the 2nd ISETS International Conference at Nanjing on 1-4 November 2024 and the organizers of the dedicated workshop at Wuhan University welcome scholars to submit papers that provide policy recommendations for the design of green development in the BRI.

Click on “LOGIN/REGISTER” on this conference website. Log in to your member portal. If you are new, you need to register. If you forget your password, please reset it. Your username is the one you chose during registration. You can also use your email address as your username.

Click on the “Personal Account” section in the upper right corner of the webpage. (If this is your first time registering, your personal name will be displayed as “[Empty Empty]” instead of your “[First name Given name]”. You only need to click on “ACCOUNT” in the “Personal Account” section to modify it.) Then, click on “My Events” to submit your paper and register for attendance. In “My Events,” select “The 2nd ISETS International Conference” under “AVAILABLE EVENTS” and click on “Register Now.”

Follow the instructions to fill in the submission information. Please ensure that your submitted abstract adheres to the requirements outlined in the template file. If the download link for the Abstract Template does not appear, you can either refresh the webpage or click here to download it. Once you have filled in all the submission information, click “SAVE” to complete the process.

 

Setp 4: Pay the conference fee

After completing the submission information, the submission information in the “CURRENT EVENTS” section of your “MY EVENTS” column will be updated as shown in the figure below. The “SUBMISSION STATUS” will change to a gray “To be determined” button. At this point, the ISETS conference committee will review your submission and decide whether to accept or reject it.

After received an accepted email from ISETS2024 office. Your “SUBMISSION STATUS” will update to green “Approved”, and you can click “PAY NOW” to pay the conference fee. However, if you receive a rejected email from ISETS2024 office, you cannot find a “PAY NOW” button.

Registration Fees for Conference Participation:

Important Guidelines:

  1. Advance Payment Required: All registration fees must be paid in advance. Please note that onsite registration will not be available.
  2. Paper Inclusion in Program: To include a paper in the conference program, at least one author must register by 15 September 2024. For multiple accepted submissions, a different author is required to register and present each paper. Failure to comply will necessitate the withdrawal of one or more papers.
  3. Student Status Verification: Full-time students (excluding post-doctoral researchers) must provide proof of their status, such as a valid student ID card or a letter from the head of their institution or program director.
  4. Payment Methods: Fees should be paid online. In exceptional cases, payment via Bank Transfer can be arranged.

Cancellations Policy
Once the registration fee is confirmed, no refunds can be issued from the original payment under any circumstances. However, if you are unable to attend, you may transfer your fully paid registration to another member of your organization. This substitution is allowed until September 30, 2024.

Nanjing have a typical north subtropical monsoon climate with pleasant living conditions and abundant rainfall. 52.3 mm (2.060 inches) of average precipitation, and an average temperature of 11.5℃ (52.7℉) during the 2nd ISETS 2024 (November) make the human body feel a little cold. Nanjing’s water area accounts for more than 11% of the total area, with a forest cover of 31.3% and a green plant cover of 45.16% in the built-up area, making Nanjing one of the top three cities in China and known as the “Green City”.

Nanjing is one of the most developed cities in China. As of 2020, Nanjing has a resident urban population of 8.08 million, a regional GDP of $230 billion, the 3rd highest GDP per capita and the 1st aggregate consumption per capita in China. Nanjing is ranked 11th in Asia and 5th in mainland China in list of the top 100 Asian cities (2020) by UN-Habitat.

Nanjing is an important science research base in China and one of the cities with the highest concentration of higher education resources in China. Nanjing has 757,100 undergraduate students and 161,000 postgraduate students, 84 fellows from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 107 national key disciplines, 12 China first-class universities and 38 China first-class disciplines, ranking 3rd in China. Nanjing is ranked 8th in the Nature Index – Research Cities list (2020) by Springer Nature.

Scenic Attractions & Culinary Specialties

Nanjing has many scenic attractions and its culinary specialties are also popular in China (see the Tour section of our website for details). Nanjing is surrounded by rivers and beautiful sceneries. There are many must-see attractions such as the Zhongshan Mausoleum (中山陵,5A Tourist Attractions in China), the Confucius Temple – Qinhuai River Scenic Area (夫子庙-秦淮风光带,5A), the Presidential Palace (总统府,4A) and Xuanwu Lake Park (玄武湖,4A). These sites have a very distinctive Republican era and Jiangnan waterfront character. Nanjing has a wide range of cuisine, with classics such as Duck Blood and Vermicelli Soup, Nanjing Salted Duck, Pan-fried Beef Dumplings, Red Bean Soup with Sweet Rice Balls, Plum Cake, and Sweet-scented Osmanthus Taro. They are all on the sweet side and you must try them when in Nanjing.

Electricity

The electricity voltage in China is 220V, 50Hz. Please note that plug adapters may be necessary. The plug types used in China are either Type A and Type I. A hybrid socket is almost universally found, which accepts a combination of the above plug types. Delegates are strongly encouraged to carry their own adapters for use with laptops and other electrical appliances as the Secretariat will not be able to provide these. In case of need, adapters can be purchased from shops in the city dealing in electronic and electrical items.

Route 1: Metro Line 3 [Nanjing South Railway Station] (direction to Linchang) and get off at [Fuzimiao Station] (Exit 3), walk 530 metres (see map below).

交通方式二:乘坐出租车约28分钟(不堵车),约20-40元。

Route 2: It’s about 15 minutes by taxi (no traffic jam), costing 20-40 RMB.

 

      2. From Nanjing Railway Station to conference hotel: 从铁路南京站前往会议酒店

交通方式一:地铁3号线【南京站】上车(开往秣周东路方向)至【夫子庙站】下车(3号口),下车后步行530米(见下方示意图);

Route 1: Metro Line 3 [Nanjing South Railway Station] (direction to Mozhou Road East) and get off at [Fuzimiao Station] (Exit 3), then walk 530m (see map below)

      3. From Nanjing Lukou International Airport to conference hotel: 从南京禄口国际机场前往会议酒店

交通方式一:地铁S1号线【禄口机场站】上车(开往南京南站方向)至【南京南站】下车,换乘地铁3号线【南京南站】上车(开往林场方向)至【夫子庙站】下车(3号口),下车后步行530米(见下方示意图);

Route 1: Metro Line S1 [Lukou Airport Station] (direction to Nanjing South Railway Station) to [Nanjing South Railway Station], transfer to Metro Line 3 [Nanjing South Railway Station] (direction to Linchang) to [Fuzimiao Station] (Exit 3) and walk 530m (see map below).

The organizing committee will inquire via email and WeChat group before October to ask all attendees if they are willing to check in the conference hotel and to collect relevant accommodation information. The conference fee does not include hotel accommodation costs.
