18 December 2024, Sydney
The inaugural ISETS-ESCAP Global Competition of Youth Voice on Energy Transition has concluded with resounding success, showcasing the creativity and determination of young innovators worldwide. This global competition attracted approximately 300 participants from 77 teams across 37 countries, fostering a collaborative platform to tackle sustainable development challenges and advance low-carbon energy transitions.
Following intense regional rounds, top-performing teams were awarded sponsorship to participate in the global finals held in Chengdu, China, from November 28 to 30, 2024, hosted by the Southwestern University of Finance and Economics (SWUFE). In the competition, these teams further showcased their innovative solutions, technologies, and strategies to an audience of judges, delegates, and attendees. The Energy Victory team claimed the top prize, while BioFSM and Y4E Southeast Asia teams secured second place, and Lumio, PoWater, and Keuka Ventures Innovation Hub earned third place honors.
Beyond the competition, organizers curated a vibrant series of cultural and intellectual exchange activities. Participants engaged in brainstorming sessions on sustainable development and energy transition, explored the evolution of currency at Money and Finance Museum of SWUFE, and experienced traditional Chinese crafts like lacquer fan painting. Interactive activities such as the “Pitch-pot” game and wearing Hanfu further enriched their cultural experience, leaving lasting memories of camaraderie and cross-cultural appreciation. The competition’s impact extended beyond Chengdu, as winning teams were invited to the 13th Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development at the United Nations ESCAP headquarters in Bangkok from December 2 to 4, 2024. On December 4, the Youth Dialogue on Energy Transition brought together representatives from the UN’s all five regional economic commissions, including ESCAP’s Mr. Hongpeng Liu, a key advocate of the Chengdu finals. Other distinguished speakers included experts from UNECA, ECLAC, ESCWA, and UNECE, along with ISETS, whose opening address emphasized the profound academic and practical value of the event.
